It's hard to believe that we are starting our fourth week of school already and it is the middle of September! Teachers enjoyed spending the first eight days getting to know students and families. We also learned a lot last week in our first week of the longer day schedule. Thank you so much for providing feedback along the way. It helps us all to plan and design the best learning we can while students are at home. As I shared at Back-To-School-Night, the first eight days focused on making connections and getting families connected! As we transition to the longer day schedule, our focus has now moved to the four A's! The first two A's are academics and assessment, and I will share more below. But there are two other A's that are just as important: adjustments and appreciation!
Adjustments & Appreciation
As you know, distance learning is not easy! Our school has spent an incredible amount of time planning everything and reimagining everything from taking attendance to the schedules for the day. As with life, we make the best plans we can, and then we need to make little and big adjustments once we are underway. Last week was our first full week and we learned so much! We have already made some adjustments which you should feel this week. Kindergarten has consolidated some of their Zooms to limit the logging on and off so many times, and school-wide we will be using the some or all of the phonics block as a time to assess and meet in small groups as needed. Supply pickup time hours will be expanded to start at 7:45 and will be self-pickup throughout the day to provide families flexibility. These are just a few of the changes you will notice as we continue to work on meeting the needs for all!
This leads me to our second A: appreciation! We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to families and students for diving in and doing your best with distance learning! We know that this is not easy. I also want to share my gratitude to our teachers and staff who continue to work tirelessly to make amazing, warm, and inviting classrooms come to life in Zoom. What you see on the Chromebook screen is just a small slice of everything behind the scenes. Every video you see, every link, and every slide is handmade with love and care. As we continue on this journey together, let's remember to celebrate small wins, look for little bright spots, and share appreciation when we can. We will, too! There is something good in every day and those little moments will sustain through these times.
Academics & Assessment
Starting last week, teachers began to work on specific academic content and began the process of assessing students to see what they know. You may have noticed your child being pulled 1:1 by a teacher or they may have been part of a small group. This will continue over the next few weeks in all grades, and will help teachers to plan the best instruction to meet the needs of every student.
In addition to the individual assessments, second grade will be giving the iReady diagnostic test this week. Monday will be an introduction to the test itself, and then testing will begin Tuesday and continue over the rest of the week. This test in second grade will take the place of some of the LIVE reading and math times planned in the schedule, and the schedule specifics will be shared by the teacher. It is important to note that this first time the kids are really learning to take the test, and the results of the first test may be a little less accurate as they learn the task. However, we expect that they will also show lots of growth when they take it again later in the year. We don't want kids or families to feel nervous about this test and we expect to learn a lot of great information. Please reach out to me or your child's teacher if you have any questions. The videos below provide an awesome introduction to the iReady diagnostic and taking it from home. Teachers will be available via Zoom during the test to help you and the students if needed.
¡Es difícil creer que ya estamos comenzando nuestra cuarta semana de clases y estamos a mediados de septiembre! Los maestros disfrutaron pasar los primeros ocho días conociendo a los estudiantes y sus familias. También aprendimos mucho la semana pasada en nuestra primera semana del horario de día más largo. Académicos y evaluación
