Back To School #2!

Dear Waggoner Families,
Who's ready for the first day of school #2? We are so excited to welcome back our students in person on March 8th for A cohort, and March 11th for our B cohort! Whether your child will be returning to campus or continuing with long term distance learning, this shift may bring feelings of anxiousness or worry for both students and families. Some of our kids have never set foot on our campus and this will be a new reality for everyone. Having said that, it’s going to be wonderful! We will be doing another soft start for the first two weeks so that we can spend time getting to know each other, the campus, and all of the routines and procedures, just like we would normally have done in August! We also anticipate that we will need to make some adjustments along the way. We have planned thoroughly, and we have tried to think of everything, but we will see how things go with REAL LIVE kids here! Our focus will be happiness and safety as we begin. Thanks for your patience, support, and flexibility!

The first day of school, students will be escorted in groups to their classrooms where they will be greeted by teachers and staff. Throughout the day students will get to know the campus and each other. We can’t wait to see the kids!
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support you!

Family Forum Nurse Follow-Up Letter

Hybrid Update

What we know: We are all excited to return to school and the numbers in Yolo County are improving each week! It is very possible that we will return to the red tier this week - the tier is updated by county health officials every Tuesday afternoon. You can expect an announcement from. the district office on the 24th about returning to school. Also, Yolo County Public Health Officer Dr. Amy Sisson presented a COVID health and safety update at the most recent board meeting. It was extremely informative and cleared up many questions I had. Truly the guidelines and information change so often it's challenging to keep up. Her presentation can be viewed HERE.

Good news: Many of our staff were able to get their first (and some a second!) vaccine shot this past week or are scheduled soon! This is good news! We are grateful for Yolo County for prioritizing educators and other front line workers this time around.

What's new: We are getting to the end of our reopening punch list at Waggoner! Plexiglass and furniture are being placed, final supplies and PPE are being distributed, and class lists are being finalized with the changes from the most recent survey. We did have about 40 families change their placement, but we are still able to stay with our original plan for how teachers are supporting students in hybrid and long term distance learning. We will be sending out a final reminder of your child's cohort before reopening.

***If you have changed your mind about your child returning, or need transportation in hybrid, please contact Nicole Brace the office directly. The survey is now closed.***

A Love Letter

Dear Waggoner Students, Staff, and Families,

Thank you so much for being amazing. This past year we have faced many challenges together and I know that this four-day weekend was much needed and welcomed by all. I am so thankful for each and every one of you - you are the reason our Waggoner community is so special. I appreciate your perseverance and dedication through all of the obstacles. A year ago, I don't think anyone knew how this would all unfold and yet here we are still standing, together.  Know that you are seen and appreciated- this is not easy. I hope that during these four days that you were able to catch your breath, rest, and find some time to do things that you love with your favorite people. And know that right now that YOU are most important and I hope you are all taking care of you.

I am so grateful to spend my days leading and serving in Winters, alongside you all. Sending you the biggest virtual hug!

Consider this a love letter from me to all of you.

With love,

-Jennifer

-Jennifer

Valentine Party!

It was so fun seeing so many students at the Valentine Party with the Principal lunches! Here are some second graders finding some red things during our scavenger hunt. If you missed it, no worries! The slides are above and you can have your own party at home! The kids were sure families would want to do the scavenger hunt and dance party! Have a wonderful Valentines Day and long weekend!

Family Forums & February Fun

Waggoner COVID-19 Update

What we know: Yolo County continues in the purple tier at this time, although the adjusted case rate has been improving.  The district plan continues to be to reopen in the red tier, and the district is working with local health officials and watching the numbers in anticipation of reopening as soon as it is safe to do so. We will make sure families have sufficient notice for planning prior to reopening.

What's new? Last week the board of trustees approved the long term distance learning platforms for the middle school and high school students who will remain in distance learning full time. Also, at Waggoner our maintenance team has finished assembling beautiful new tables for outdoor seating and learning spaces. Plexiglass is installed in classrooms and safety signage is being finalized this week. (The plexiglass looks a little cloudy below-- the protective coating still needs to be removed. )

We are working hard and excited to welcome kids back as soon as we can!

What's next? In the next few weeks, all WJUSD sites will have family forums to share information about returning in hybrid or longterm distance learning. Forums will feature academic and social emotional information, presentations from our district nurses, safety protocols, transportation, and food services. Waggoner's Family Forum is February 22nd (5:30 English / 6:30 Spanish).  We will also answer frequently asked questions submitted by families. A few of you have already asked some great questions:

Will kids have recess? YES! Kids will get to play! Grades K-2 will be on the large playground and will play in designated zones by cohort that will change. The play structure will be open and we are looking forward to lots of fun!

Will kids be COVID tested? According to the latest guidance, no student testing is required when reopening in the red tier.

Here is the WJUSD Family Forum Flyer .

If you have questions about reopening, please submit here:

Waggoner Family Forum Questions Form https://forms.gle/XfJs4BxmMhxtand1A

Review of Hybrid and Long Term Distance Learning Information

Our Waggoner bell schedule when we return will be 8:15-12:15 for all grades. All hybrid students will have a snack/recess break and will get a grab and go lunch to take home the days they are at school.
  • For students returning in hybrid, they are on A or B schedule. “A” cohort students will attend school on Monday and Tuesday and will be on Distance Learning Wednesday through Friday. “B” cohort students will attend school on Thursday and Friday and will be on Distance Learning Monday through Wednesday.
  • For students remaining in Distance Learning, this will look a little different than it does now, and is different depending on grade level and/or DBE. The changes depended on the number of students remaining in Distance Learning at each grade.
  • Distance Learning students in TK and Kindergarten will remain with their current teacher. There will be some times during the day when the at home kids are online with the at school group. They will still have support from the teacher and aide, but may not have as many zooms during the 8:15-12:15 time as they do now. They will still have assignments and a schedule to follow.
  • Distance Learning students in first and second grade DBE classes will remain with their current teacher. There will be some times during the day when the at home kids are online with the at school group. They will still have support from the teacher, but may not have as many zooms during the 8:15-12:15 time as they do now. They will still have assignments and a schedule to follow.
  • Due to the number of students staying on Distance Learning in first and second grade, we have designated a specific teacher to teach those students. Mrs. Petersen will be teaching the first grade DL students, and Ms. Hanna will teach the second grade DL students. Students in those two classes who are returning in hybrid will attend in person with another teacher at their grade. We have not made those assignments yet. Once we return fully, students will return to their current teacher.
Aún no hemos hecho esas asignaciones.

Return to School Survey

Dear Waggoner Families:

In November, we sent a survey to find out if you would like your child to return to school in person in a hybrid model when it is safe to do so, or if you would like your child to participate in long term Distance Learning until we reopen fully, or until the end of the 2020-21 school year.

At this time, we would like to update our information - we understand a lot has changed since November. Please complete this brief form for each child at Waggoner. There is a separate form that will be sent by each site. If you already selected hybrid or distance learning, this is just confirming your choice. It also allows you to change your selection should your family needs have changed. The form is in English and Spanish.

Please complete the form by February 5th by clicking here:

Thank you!
