 Happy Monday Waggoner! Last week was AWESOME! Lots of hard work and energy resulted in a great first five days in person at school and a week with new teachers for many of our distance learners! This week we are excited to highlight some of our distance learners and the teachers and students who continue to rock learning at home. We also have a fun video from the first of our five day in person week. There is always lots to celebrate at Waggoner!

First Graders in Distance Learning are hard at work getting ready to become second graders! We read, write, and do math everyday. What an awesome group of readers we are! I am proud of all the growth this year in our daily reading groups. Students who are ready are reading the Magic Treehouse books. We are writing nonfiction and “teaching” books during our Writing Workshop. In math, we are learning all about three-dimensional shapes. We use many first grade websites like iReady, IXL, Epic! and Scholastic News.

Each subject area has an instructional video. Students come to the Zoom Room with Mrs. Petersen throughout the day for help and support, and sometimes, to work on their projects with other students. Partners and small groups use breakout rooms to work together. We also have time for independent work.

Wednesdays are mostly asynchronous. We have activities planned in science, social studies, art, and music. Mrs. Petersen works with small groups and completes one-on-one assessments.

Packets are available for pick-up every two weeks with all the supplies students need included. We also have “Just For Fun” activities like mystery pictures, coloring pages, and themed video libraries.

We try to stick to a theme for each week- this week is insects! Next week each child will receive his/her own butterfly larva to observe as it goes through its life cycle until we release them in our backyards!

THE BIG DAY OF GIVING IS COMING MAY 6th!

Dear Parents and Community Members:

Those of us who serve on the Board of the Winters Education Foundation find ourselves in high spirits now that Spring has arrived. We are entering a season of rebirth both literally and figuratively. In terms of education, many students are back at school, and we are hopeful the number of days students attend in person will increase prior to the end of the school year. We are keeping our fingers crossed about that!

As you know, the mission of WEF is to raise sufficient funds to ensure continued educational excellence and equal educational opportunities for every child in a Winters public school classroom. Over the past eleven years, with the generous help of the Winters community and the Yoche Dehe Community Fund, we have allocated over $480,000 dollars in projects to fulfill that mission, and 2020-2021 has been no exception. We reached out to principals and asked what they needed to help teachers and students with distance learning and donated almost $8,000 to support distance learning this school year. We also sought and were awarded a $9,000.00 grant from the Yolo Community Foundation to provide translators and books in Spanish for ELL students in TK-5th grade classrooms..

Our largest fundraiser of the year is coming up, and we hope to have your continued support for the Big Day of Giving on May 6th. We reinvest the donations into Winters classrooms in a variety of ways, from field trips to guest speakers to technology support to supplemental materials. Every school in the District receives funds from WEF.

In order to continue enriching the lives of students in our schools, we rely on your Big Day of Giving gifts. Donations open on April 22nd and you can go to our webpage www.mywef.org to make your donations. Or, go to the Big Day of Giving website. WMB also provides financial support for students in band, choir, guitar, and music appreciation at Winters Middle School and Winters High School. Over the years, WMB has helped send students to parades, competitions, honor bands and more. They provide two scholarships to graduating seniors who seek to continue with music after high school. Winters Music Boosters is a small organization entirely run by volunteers who believe in the power and value of music education. One hundred percent of BDOG donations will go to supporting music education for TK-12th grade students in Winters. Monday 4/26 Reminders

We are excited to welcome our in-person students in the morning. Since we have some students attending for the first time in person, and we will have twice as many students on campus, here are a few reminders:

1. Drop off for students is from 7:45-8:15. There is no supervision before 7:45. School starts at 8:15. 
2. TK and Kindergarten students enter at the gate at the beginning of the drop off line. First and second grade students enter at the gate before the office. Please socially distance and wait in line outside the gate. All students will have their temperatures taken and hands sanitized as they enter. Parents may walk students to the gate or drive up in the drop off lane. Please pull all the way forward in the drop off lane. Parents are not allowed to enter campus at this time. Thank you!
3. Masks are required at all times on campus. If your child forgets their mask, we have lots and we will give them one at the gate. 
4. Water fountains are not in use at school. Please send a water bottle with your child's name on it. 
5. Thank you again for you patience and understanding. This is our 4th first day of school this year and every change brings excitement and challenges. Together we can navigate anything!
6. If you decide you would like to change your child to in-person or to distance learning, please contact our office. These changes may take up to two business days. Thank you.

Top 5 for Five Days!

 As we prepare to return 5 days next week, here are the top 5 things you need to know for a great week!

1. In person school starts at 8:15 and ends at 12:00 for TK/K and 8:15-12:15 for 1st and 2nd grades. Students should be in class ready to learn at 8:15.
2. Please pull all the way forward in the drop off lane. Do not stop at the TK/K gate. This keeps traffic out of the street. Thank you!
3. We have new bus routes starting next week. Please look at the stops and find the one closest to your home. You should also let your child's teacher know if your student is a NEW bus rider. WAGGONER BUS ROUTES HERE: bit.ly/WagBus4-23 *Only Waggoner students ride our buses.
4. All DISTANCE LEARNING TK, Kindergarten, and K-2 DBE  students will have a new distance learning teacher starting Monday. TK/K have Mrs. Juli Chang and Mrs. Arrellano! First grade DBE will be taught by Mr. Hudson Nunes and Mrs. Arrellano! Ms. Herrera Cuevas and Ms. Nunez will be teaching the 2nd grade DBE class. All of these staff are wonderful and are excited to be with your kids the rest of the year! You will hear from them with more information soon! Ms. Hanna and Mrs. Petersen are continuing with their Distance Learning classes.
5. Thank you for being patient and flexible as we navigate this change. We are so excited for kids to be here and we know there me a few bumps as we begin. It will be awesome!

Return to 5 Days

Good evening Waggoner Families,

Tonight the WJUSD board voted to approve a return to 5 days a week in person instruction beginning Monday April 26th. We are excited to see the students 5 days a week from 8:15 until 12:00. Students should be ready to learn, in the classroom by 8:15. To prepare for this return, there will not be in person school on Friday, April 23rd. Teachers will meet with all students Friday morning on Zoom at 8:30 and the rest of the day students will complete lessons from Google Classroom. This day is planned this way so that teachers can work to make the classrooms organized and safe for your child’s return on Monday.

Every day your child will need to bring with them water and a snack (we do have graham crackers here). 

If your child is continuing in Long Term Distance learning in TK, Kindergarten, or DBE more information will be sent no later than Friday. Mrs. Petersen and Ms. Hanna will continue to support their distance learners.

Esta noche, la junta de WJUSD votó para aprobar un regreso a la instrucción de 5 días a la semana a partir del lunes 26 de abril. Estamos emocionados de ver a los estudiantes 5 días de 8:15 a 12:00. Los estudiantes deben estar listos para aprender, en el salón de clases a las 8:15.

 Hello Waggoner Families!

I hope you had a great weekend. This is a very TINY edition of the Wave! We have had some questions about reopening 5 days in person pending approval by the board, so this is just a follow up:

• If your child is already attending in person hybrid, we are planning on them attending 5 days in person unless you let us know differently.
• If your child will need bus transportation when we return 5 days (and is not riding the bus now) please call Nicole in the office so we can make sure we get you on the bus list and get your correct stop. 
• We have reached out to our current long term distance learning families separately - watch for an email.

5 Day Reopening

Good evening Waggoner Families,

Today all WJUSD families received a survey about returning in person 5 days a week. Pending board approval at a special board meeting on April 21st, students will be able to return in 5 days a week with our current bell schedule. We have received many questions from families this afternoon, so hopefully this post will answer a few of your questions. 

1. If your child already attends in person in hybrid, and you would like your child to return 5 days, you don't need to complete the survey. 
2. If your child is in Distance Learning and you would like your child to continue learning from home, you don't need to complete the survey.

If you would like to make a change from Distance Learning to in person, or switch from in person to distance learning, please complete the survey at https://bit.ly/3eoyRDl before Monday afternoon. 

We know many families have questions about what TK-2 will look like with more students. Last night at the board meeting,  each site shared their plan information about reopening. If you were not able to attend, my presentation notes are  HERE.  

Yes, it will look different, but we also know that our students are flexible and have already demonstrated they can wear masks and follow safety protocols at school. We are excited to welcome students back to campus 5 days a week. However, we also recognize that every family will make the decision that is best for them. We are committed to providing the best experience possible for all of our students, at home and at school! 

The schedule is included below. It has not changed from our current hybrid schedule. We do not have any Zoom time for our in- person student schedule.

April 23rd is scheduled to be a Distance Learning day for all grades (after the 8:30 morning check in on zoom) so that teachers can set up classrooms before Monday. No students will attend on campus that day.

Hello families,

There are not words to describe the beautiful weather right now. I hope you had a chance to get out this weekend to enjoy it! 

As we head into the last nine weeks of school, I would like to say thank you for all you have done to support your child. This has been a year with many changes and challenges and there is a light at the end of the tunnel! We are looking forward to finishing the year strong and finding something to celebrate in every day. We are happy to be a part of your life!

On April 20th we are hosting a Zoom Kindergarten & TK information night to share about our programs, to answer your questions, and to provide information about next year - as much as we know now. From 5:30 - 6:15, we will have our English presentation, and at 6:30, we will have our presentation in Spanish. We are looking forward to meeting new families!

Then, on April 22, from 6-8 is the Virtual Poetry Jam & Slam! This is also a Zoom event. Please review the past blogs for all of the information.

Good News! This week we have picture day! Packets were sent home with students this week. Families may also order by following this link: https://vando.imagequix.com/g1000847218#login Gallery Password: WGGF20 *** All students will be photographed, so if you don't fill out a form in advance you can still order online through April 10th.

Cohort A: Tuesday April 6th - Pictures will be taken in person during the school day.
Cohort B: Thursday April 8th - Pictures will be taken in person during the school day.

Long Term Distance Learners: 

Pictures will be taken on April 6th and 8th from 12:30-1:30 only on a drop in basis-- no appointment needed. 

There are no makeup picture days this year.

What's New?  Over Spring Break, the California Department of Public Health released new safety guidance for schools. Our Director of Special Ed & Student Services shared a presentation at last week's board meeting regarding the new guidance and implications for WJUSD. The entire presentation can be viewed here. Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions. I anticipate more information will follow. 

What We Know: What we do know is that hybrid is going really well and our long term distance learners are doing great. Thanks for all of your support!

Overall, pickup and drop off times are going smoothly. A few reminders that will help keep kids safe and traffic moving:

1. Please pull all the way forward before stopping. We will help your child out of the car, or bring your child to you. We know the TK/Kinder gate is at the beginning-- we will help your child walk down to the gate. 
2. Please stay in your car and keep moving forward. 
3. If you want to walk and pickup, please park in the neighborhood and use t he crosswalk with lights.
4. Drop off is from 7:45-8:15. School starts promptly at 8:15. 
5. Thanks for your smiles at pickup and drop off! We love seeing you!

Students, Staff, & Families: It’s time for the 11th Annual Poetry Jam and Slam! This year the event will be held virtually via a Poetry Jam/Slam Webinar on April 22nd beginning at 6:30pm for the TK-5th grade performances, with the middle school and high school performances immediately to follow.

The deadline for sign ups is April 5th and the deadline for posting videos will be April 12. The videos have a 3-minute limit and we are keeping last names off the Flipgrid to protect online privacy.

We have set it up as a Flipgrid (which hopefully most of you are familiar with) to make it easy for the students to record their poems. They will need to select TK-5 OR 6-12 as their topic.

Participant Prizes for individual or small group (2-4 students) poems will be a $5 Kona Ice gift certificate sponsored by Winters PTA. Whole Class Participants (TK-5) will receive a size upgrade to Kona Ice, sponsored by Kona Ice Winters. 6th-12th grade will perform in a slam beginning at approximately 7:15 to compete for a variety of local gift-cards! In addition, 6th-12th will also compete for gift card prizes with a separate middle school and separate high school competition. The top 6 middle school students and the top 6 high school students will receive a Target Gift Card from First Northern Bank and Winters Friends of the Library, a free personal pizza from Pizza Factory Winters, and a free drink from Steady Eddy's.
