Celebrations: This week we celebrate our Waggoner 2020-21 Star Students who were recognized at last week's board meeting. We are also excited to share that Robin Preiss Glasser, the illustrator best known for her Fancy Nancy Books, will be visiting Waggoner on November 18th via Zoom for a virtual assembly! (And Laura Numeroff is coming in December!)

You will also find information about Winters Library services and WJUSD free/reduced lunch applications. Finally, there is no school Wednesday November 11th in honor of Veterans Day.

Zoey is a second grader and is Waggoner’s Rising Star for the 2020-21 school year. Her teacher, Mrs. Bryant, shared this about Zoey! “Zoey is going places! She is a great participant on Zoom and is always ready to share her thoughts for math and writing. She has persevered through some little tech glitches and continues to show up with a positive attitude every day.” We are all so proud of you! Congratulations, Zoey!
Natalia is in kindergarten and is Waggoner’s 2020-21 Shining Star! Her teacher Mrs. Oates shares that she listens to understand. She asks questions when she has them. She gives detailed explanations on how she accomplishes her tasks. She completes every assignment and has even created an art gallery on her wall at home to display her work. She is going to go far in this world! You are doing a fabulous job this year! Congratulations Natalia!
Yovanni is a first grader in Ms. Martinez’ DBE class. She shared that he is always willing to participate on Zoom. He is polite, kind, and caring. He is always willing to learn and try new things-which is quite frequent in distance learning. He is growing across all subjects in both English and Spanish and he has embodied a growth mindset, embracing and learning from mistakes that allow his mind to grow! Congratulations Yovanni!

With over 100 books to her credit, and winner of the Children’s Book Council’s “Illustrator of the Year Award” in 2013, Robin is best known as the illustrator of the Fancy Nancy series. Books in the series have been on the New York Times Bestseller list for more than 330 weeks, selling over 43 million volumes. Nancy now stars in her own Emmy-nominated Disney television animated series that premiered in 2018.
Lambslide, and Escape Goat, written by international best-selling novelist Ann Patchett, are Robin’s most recent books.
Robin has two grown children, Sasha and Benjamin, and lives in San Juan Capistrano, California, with her husband, attorney Robert Berman.

Information: Returning to In-Person Instruction
We encourage all families to complete the free/reduced lunch application, even if you don't think you qualify.
All families play a role in ensuring our schools are properly funded. You can do your part by making sure that you fill out and return the free & reduced price meal application form that you received in your child’s back to school packet.
Meal applications are also online this year. Access online applications on the Winters Joint Unified School District web page, food services tab, EZ School Meal Application. A few important notes:
A large portion of the funds received from the state are based on the socio-economic status of our students. Collecting meal applications from our families will ensure our schools receive the maximum amount of state funding possible.
Please note that all information received by the district remains strictly confidential. For help on how to complete the meal application form or if you have any other questions please contact Cathleen Olsen (530-795-6109).

Information: Returning to In-Person Instruction
At the November 5th board meeting, the WJUSD Pathways To Reopening and Phase Three/Hybrid presentations were shared as information items. The Pathways presentations shares the safety components of reopening, and the Phase Three/ Hybrid presentation shared specific information about where we are in the process of reopening, next steps, and site specific information. These presentations are included below, as well as a link to the board agenda. At the next board meeting, the board will take action on the district's recommendation to reopen in a hybrid model beginning January 19th, 2021. This allows sufficient time to build student cohorts that align families across the district, and also time to complete installation of plexiglass and other safety and PPE in preparation for reopening in person. The slides also include information about the Yolo County current COVID-19 tier, rationale for beginning after the holiday break, and survey information about how many families will continue in distance learning.
At Waggoner, our tentative hybrid schedule will be an 8:15-12:15 school day for all grades. Students will have a recess/snack break on the in-person days, with snack provided, and a grab and go lunch to be sent home with students. We are currently working on our A/B cohorts and reaching out to the approximately 60 families who did not complete the survey. Our initial order of plexiglass has arrived, as well as student and staff masks and other PPE including lots of hand sanitizer! We have been collaborating with district nurses around screening for any COVID symptoms and tracking and tracing protocols. Teachers are working on hybrid schedules and planning for the in person and at home learners. Cold and flu season is also upon us, so we encourage you to stay safe, socially distance, and wash your hands. Let's stay healthy, Waggoner! We miss you!
